Throughout the year these are some units and types of games that I will cover.
Warm-Activities
I always include warm-up activities to get the students' blood flowing and make sure they are loose to prevent the smaller injuries during classtime. As important as warm-ups are, I also like to include cool downs at the end of my lesson to make sure the students retain information throughout the short time I see them and also to calm them down before returning to their classes.
Team Building
Occastionally I love to do team building activities with the students. I feel it builds upon team building from the classroom but the gym allows a bigger space for more movement based team building skills. Students will also develop team building during main sports units in gym class.
Academic Integration
I believe that physical education is all about movement and teaching students about sports throughout the year, but every now and then I like to include academic integration into the classroom. Academic integration is taking classroom information (cognitive ability) and applying it into games within the physical education classroom. Some games I like to include are: Even and Odd Tag, Spelling Word Relay, Rock Paper Scissors Math, Spelling Wizard Tag, Roll With It. I hope to find other games that can be successful for cross learning between the classroom and P.E.
Throwing and Catching Games
Since baseball requires gloves, I will incorporate games that still work with students' abilities to throw and catch balls. I will also have different types of kickball games so students can still learn basic rules of baseball through kickball games.
Basketball Skills and Gameplay
Basketball is one of my favorite sports. Students will have the opportunity to work on skills and also the gameplay of basketball. The main skills with basketball will be shooting, passing, and dribbling. After students have multiple classes to practice then we will play modified basketball games.
Soccer Skills and Gameplay
In my soccer unit we will first start with skills that include dribbling, passing, and shooting. After students have time to practice their soccer skills we will then learn the rules of soccer. When students feel comfortable with the skills we will play modified soccer games, such as; 4 goal soccer, regular soccer, wall soccer, etc.
Volleyball Skills and Gameplay
Volleyball will first incorporate the skills of bumping, setting, and underhand serving. We will start off with balloons so the students can have an easier time to understand the proper form. After students understand the skills of volleyball we will play regular volleyball games and play a tournament at the end of the unit.
Football Skills with Occasional Flag Football/Modified Football Games
The football skills being worked on will be throwing and catching, followed by the rules and gameplay of football. Students will be able to play capture the flag football as well as endzone football and other modified football games.
If there is any other sports or games that you would like to see involved, I am completely open to suggestions by email. Thank you!!
